A clinical preventative service can prevent disease or detect disease early. Prevention should be included in community health. The Patient Care and Affordable Care Act was put law into law 2010. The ACA provide preventative services and primary care. There is a gap in preventative care in some populations. They include low income individuals, racial and ethnic minorities, and older adults (Ayres & Bradley, 2017). The example below, HIV PrEP, is an example of a clinical preventative intervention. The Healthy People 2030 has a decrease in HIV infections as an objective. It also has increase knowledge of HIV as an objective (Healthy People 2030, n.d.). This is beneficial as many people many not be aware of the transmission and the treatment that is available. The intervention of PrEP is effective as people now have free access to preventative care.
An example of a clinical preventative intervention is HIV PrEP. PrEP is a medication that is used for pre- exposure prophylaxis. It reduces the risk of getting HIV through sex by 99%. It can also reduce the risk from injection drug use by 74% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022b). The medication is given to those who are considered to be high risk. There is a program that is through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is called Ready, Set , PrEP. This program provides free PrEP medication. This is in effort to end HIV. The medication can be taken orally with a pill or through injection at a clinic. In 2020 around 30,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with HIV. The most common transmission is through make to male sexual contact (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022a).
