Premise: Thus far in the course, we’ve explored what it means to be healthy and the significance of longstanding health myths. In Unit 3, you will identify a current debate in the field of health and medicine. A debate is an issue or problem that is being actively discussed by members of a community. In your essay, you will perform a rhetorical analysis of the arguments being made within the debate you’ve chosen to look at. A rhetorical analysis is a study of how arguments are made. What kinds of evidence do the authors use? What assumptions do they make? What kinds of appeals (to emotion? to logic?) do they employ? How do authors use word choice, tone, style, and metaphor to convince their readers?
This essay will require you to summarize a debate related to health and then analyze it, uncovering not only what people are saying about your chosen debate but how they’re saying it. Analyzing the way that we debate about an issue helps us uncover ways to resolve it or think about it differently!
Task: After reviewing a range of scholarly, journalistic, and popular sources about your chosen debate, select several relevant sources and rhetorically analyze how they make arguments. Then, in a 6-7 page double-spaced essay, answer the following question:
How does the rhetoric being used within your chosen debate depict and frame the issue? Moreover, why is this rhetoric significant?
Tips and Practical Matters for Success:
It won’t be enough to simply analyze the sources you find independently of one another. You’ll need to identify larger patterns across all the sources you find and consider how they speak to one another.
Your paper should have at least 5 outside sources, at least 1 of which should be scholarly in nature (from a peer-reviewed journal or a book published by a scholarly press).
As always, your papers should be carefully proofread, with your sources documented in MLA style. Please use one-inch margins throughout the essay and include page numbers.
