CASE STUDY: Monique is a 29-year-old woman who works as an administrative assistant. She has an 8-year-old son Jordan, the product of a 10-year relationship with her boyfriend, Cliff. Cliff often berates Monique for the slightest “infraction.” He does this in the presence of her family, and friends, and out in public. Cliff often criticizes her. He sometimes calls her “stupid” and “fat.” Monique has learned to keep her head down and not do anything to further irritate Cliff when he is in one of his “moods.” When they are alone, things get worse. Cliff doesn’t just embarrass her; he degrades her, calling her a filthy slut and telling her that no other man would ever want her. Cliff beats Monique so badly sometimes that she cannot go to work due to the pain and bruising. Monique would like to break up with Cliff, but she has always been too scared of him to take any action. She hopes he would find another girlfriend and leave. But she couldn’t wait; three days ago she took Jordan and went to live with her sister.
